Synopsis

Eenmaal melaats, altyd melaats.

In Genadendal, en by ’n simpatieke dr.

According to me a Prologue or the 1st Chapter of a book is THE reflection – SO it must capture my attention from page 1 I will continue a few more chapters to give the Book a fair chance to change my mind!

My Review in English

Karen Viljoen is diagnosed with leprosy.

In this story we meet a beautiful young married woman Karen – and how her whole life and choices are taken away from her.

She is a rich married lady. But with the discovery of the virus leprosy she becomes an outcast so to speak from the world she knows

This is only the start of her heartbreak and sorrows
She has a nervous breakdown after receiving this news, her husband finds a new comfort with his secretary. ((See where I am going – I hate cheating inside a marriage if you read some of my previous reviews))

Within days she is ostracized from her son, which was the hardest for her – ((as a mother I will not be able to survive such and ordeal)), also she lost her husband and her friends eventually – they did not stay in contact or visited her in the end. She was sent to a town called Genadendal, here she learns to make peace with herself, and with God, forgive everyone even herself with what happened to her.

We meet her doctor Tertius Louw – who helps her deal with this ordeal, she makes friends with other leprosy sufferers, married couples, children etc. Her doctor helps her to find herself, letting go and to trust God with her life and decisions.

Then eventually she heals – and are allowed finally return to husband and child, it is not an easy return – her husband found a new love, her son who was very young do not recognize her anymore or trust her, and the community cast her aside, and on top of it all she has the scars not just inside but also outside.

She realizes where her heart truly belongs, and returns to “Westford” Genadendal, where her friends and new family resides. And eventually she found her place in the sun – which I loved – as every person in the universe deserves a place in the sun. She realizes her love for Tertius Louw, after she left the resort as well so this books end is so worth all my tears

My resensie in afrikaans

My feelings →

This book is emotionally draining – I forgot what it took from me to read this book the first time – but to read it a second time after so many years did not change a thing in my books, it made me realize just how cruel society can be as well as the world as we know it!

Hierdie boek dreineer mens emosioneel en ek het vergeet wat dit geneem het om hierdie boek die eerste te lees, om dit ‘n 2de keer te lees na soveel jare het my laat besef daar is niks so onregverdig of so wreed as die Wereld nie!

To the Author

And this is where my love of reading started – My mom loved these types of romances – she owned every single tittle Ena Murray she has ever written

This was the first novel of Ena Murray I ever read – I cried for 4 days straight – and every time I thought I shed my last tears – something will happen and I will start all over again
This week I decided to read it again – Oh man so what happened cried myself to sleep – my hubby just laughed and said he cannot believe I do these type of things to myself
