A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

As Warden of the north, Lord Eddard Stark counts it a curse when King Robert bestows on him the office of the Hand. His honour weighs him down at court where a true man does what he will, not what he must … and a dead enemy is a thing of beauty.

The old gods have no power in the south, Stark’s family is split and there is treachery at court. Worse, the vengeance-mad heir of the deposed Dragon King has grown to maturity in exile in the Free Cities. He claims the Iron Throne.

“When you play a game of thrones you win or you die.”

“Why is it always the innocents who suffer most, when you high lords play your game of thrones?”

Some old wounds never truly heal, and bleed again at the slightest word.

This book is a bit confusing so you need time to concentrate to read it, so WHY MY 4 star rating you will ask because I will compare thee, to a good glass of wine!

description

I read this particular novel because of the rating it received on Goodreads which is up to today 5 Dec 2016 – 4.44 · Rating Details · 1,305,056 Ratings · 44,289 Reviews

To be honest, you cannot read this books first 10 chapters, and then write it off as a DNF, or a 1 star! NOPE I wanted to, but I continued, and the whole time I thought 1 million other readers cannot be wrong, there must be something in this novel that makes it a 4.44 average rating, and reason for the television series! And yes there was!

This book have so many different feels, A Game of Thrones can’t be associated to any other Novel in the Fantasy genre!

Let me explain the Novels brew →

You need to get all the ingredients together → the feel of a Historical read (which I love), add a pinch of normal Fantasy, one heaped tablespoon of dark fantasy, mix it together with mystery and confusion add lots of cultural differences 20 huge cups of war and dying, winter and cold, people losing fingers and toes – those toes and fingers are needed as well, mix and stir then boil for about 12 hours, continuous stirring very important, if you leave it to long without stirring it will burn and you will lose the whole batch of 12 hours labor – and in the end what do you get if you followed these instructions?

Well You Get PERFECTION off course!

THIS NOVEL is written in MULTIPLE VIEW POINTS!

Prologue:

“ Everyone talks about snows forty foot deep, and how the ice wind comes howling out of the north, but the real enemy is the cold. It steals up on you quieter than Will, and at first you shiver and your teeth chatter and you stamp your feet and dream of mulled wine and nice hot fires. It burns, it does. Nothing burns like the cold. But only for a while. Then it gets inside you and starts to fill you up, and after a while you don’t have the strength to fight it. It’s easier just to sit down or go to sleep. They say you don’t feel any pain toward the end. First you go weak and drowsy, and everything starts to fade, and then it’s like sinking into a sea of warm milk. Peaceful, like.”

Chapter one:

Bran thought about it. “Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?”
“That is the only time a man can be brave,” his father told him.

What I can say to you, if you are up to many hours of reading, have the time, as this is quite a long book, go ahead and read because then I will recommend this novel!

But be warned this book is not sunshine and roses, as you learn when you read this, people die and are marred because of war and the cold, sex happens, raped happens, and sometimes the `bad guys’ win – but that is life as well!

What I liked the most, are the quotes, wow this author have some brilliant quotes in this novel!
description

“A lion doesn’t concern itself with the opinion of sheep.”

“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”

“The world was full of cravens who pretended to be heroes; it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice…”

“A true man does what he will, not what he must.”

All halls lead somewhere. Where there is a way in, there is a way out. Fear cuts deeper than swords.
“… a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.”

“The things we love destroy us every time, lad. Remember that.”

“Death is so terribly final, while life is full of possibilities.”

“Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what’s on the other side?”

“Once you’ve accepted your flaws, no one can use them against you.”

“Life is not a song, sweetling.
Someday you may learn that, to your sorrow.”

“A bruise is a lesson… and each lesson makes us better.”

“Wind and words. We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy.”

“There is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man.”

Look with your eyes. Hear with your ears. Taste with your mouth. Smell with your nose. Feel with your skin. Then comes the thinking, afterward, and in that way knowing the truth.

“Swift as a deer. Quiet as a shadow. Fear cuts deeper than swords. Quick as a snake. Calm as still water.”

“The heart lies and the head plays tricks with us, but the eyes see true.”

― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

This is me after I finished this long novel, I am not sure I will read this again!

As this took away a week from my life, almost did not get time for Goodreads my bad I know! So sorry about that, now I can start the Television series and see what the fuss is about, but to read the rest of the series will take plus minus 36 hours, and yeah I do not have that many hours to really concentrate as you really need to concentrate if you want to read this otherwise you lose the plot!

To the Author:

An EPIC fantasy!
